Frequently Asked Contribute Questions

The campus website content management system uses Macromedia Contribute as the approved software for use by divisions and departments wishing to control content.

Can Contribute be used to update a website built in any application?

Contribute has been best optimized to work in conjunction with sites constructed in Macromedia Dreamweaver MX.  Sites built in other web development applications, such as Microsoft FrontPage, have been known to experience difficulties when imported into Contribute.  For more information, contact husfield@spadmin.usf.edu.

What is Macromedia Contribute? Is it the same as Dreamweaver?

Contribute is a new program that allows users to quickly and easily make updates to web pages. Contribute can be used to make new pages or to edit existing pages. The user or administrator establishes a connection to the server by entering in the server access information. The entered information also determines what pages can and cannot be edited.

Once this information is established the user can begin editing pages by browsing to the page to be edited. (Contribute is also a browser. You can surf the web just as you can with any other browser.) When you are on the page to be edited, click the Edit Page button. Contribute will switch from browse mode to edit mode, offering a toolbar with common text and table editing features, including options to make links and insert images. When your edits are done, click the Publish button and the page will be uploaded to the server. Contribute will switch back to browser mode and display your new page, live on the web! It's that easy.

Contribute is limited to adding and editing text, tables and images. You can also insert Flash files. It's designed for making direct updates to pages. This differs from Dreamweaver, which is Macromedia's full-fledged web site building program. Dreamweaver has more functionality than Contribute, and is designed to handle many web languages.

Contribute and Dreamweaver are designed to work together in a few ways. You can use Dreamweaver Templates within Contribute to quickly make new pages that are already set up, and the Contribute user can add the necessary content to the page. Contribute will recognize CSS styles added in Dreamweaver and allow users to apply custom classes. One thing to note is Dreamweaver can be used to administer Contribute users.

Do I need Dreamweaver to use Contribute?

No. Contribute is a stand-alone program that can be used to edit and create web pages on its own. You can certainly work with Dreamweaver pages to take advantage of features such as templates, but it is not required. If you are building a web site from scratch, you will need to have a homepage on the server and if there's not a homepage already existing on the server, you can create one using Contribute. Most web servers will have a homepage by default. This is used as the starting point or anchor for the rest of the site..

How can I connect to my web site with Contribute?

To use Contribute you need the connection information to access the web server. Contribute can connect to your USF SP web site using a Local/Network connection provided by Campus Computing and a User key provided by the webmaster. For information regarding web server connection information contact the webmaster: husfield@spadmin.usf.edu. The webmaster must approve your Contribute install before you can connect to the campus website.

Do I need to know HTML to use Contribute?

You do not need to know HTML to use Contribute, but it may help you better understand Contribute's functionality. The Macromedia development team has worked hard to make Contribute easy to use. Contribute's intuitive interface and dialog boxes should make it easy to get into the world of web publishing.

What computer operating systems are supported by Contribute?

Contribute supports Windows XP, 2000, NT, ME and 98 Second Edition and Apple MAC running OS X. The minimum specifications for a:

Windows computer

  • Intel Pentium II Processor or equivalent 300 MHz or better
  • Windows 98SE, 2000, NT, ME, or XP
  • Version 5.0 or higher of Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • 64 MB of Random Access Memory (RAM)
  • 30 MB of available disk space
  • 256 Color monitor capable of 800x600 resolution

Apple Macintosh - MAC

  • Apple Power Mac G3 or higher
  • Apple Mac OS X 10.1.5, 10.2.5, or 10.2.6
  • 128 MB free available system RAM
  • 60 MB of available disk space

Can I edit dynamic pages (Cold Fusion, ASP, etc) with Contribute?

Yes and no. You can edit the static portions of the page with Contribute, however, dynamic portions of the page will be locked.

Contribute is also a web browser?

Contribute has the Internet Explorer web browser embedded within the program. This allows users to use Contribute as a full fledged browser as well as an editor. Contribute's capabilities as a browser are dependent on the installed version of Internet Explorer; this includes basic browsing and plugins. If a plugin is installed in Internet Explorer, it will be available within Contribute. It's a good idea to keep your browser up to date to ensure correct rendering of web pages.
