USF WOMEN QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS

SAISA womens districts 2008

TheSAISA Women's Conference Championship was sailed in beautiful conditions on the Cooper River, hosted by the College of Charleston. A steady southerly breeze ranging from 10-20 knots, sunny skies, and an ebb tide for most of the day, allowed 12 races to be run in each division.

With the top three teams qualifying for berths at Nationals, the emphasis was on consistency. Sailing in A division, junior
Kim Witkowskiand senior Liz Foyhad an excellent series, including 2 firsts and 7 second places, to finish 2nd. In B division, freshman Rachael Silversteinhad some early jitters, resulting in being over the starting line early and hitting some marks. In a nail-biter, she came through under pressure, winning the last two races of the day to clinch 2nd. Crews Ash Landes, a junior, and Christine Sayler, another freshman, were there helping her.

Combining the scores from A division and B division, USF sailors were 2nd overall and now advance to the ICSA Women’s National Championships in Newport, RI, May 26-28. The selections for the Fall 2008 racing season were made based on the order of finishes, and USF will be traveling to Yale, Stanford, Dartmouth, Navy, and Conn College next season.

USF SAILORS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS !

WEEK 10 - April 12, 2007

USF coed sailors finished 2nd at the SAISA District Team Racing Championships, held at College of Charleston. Mitch Hall, Tim King, Chris Keimig, and Zack Marks helmed, and Stephanie Reynolds, Liz Foy, Ash Landes, Diana Cabili, and Matt Gardiner crewed.

This qualifyies them for the ICSA National Team Racing Championships, to be hosted by Brown University in Newport, RI on May 30-June 1, 2008.

WEEK 9 - April 5, 2007

USF coed sailors finished 3rd at the SAISA District Coed Dinghy Championships, held at Eckerd College in extremely windy conditions. With winds gusting over 20 and waves building, the course was moved inside to more protected waters after the first two races resulted in numerous capsizes. It was a team effort, with Mitch Hall, Chris Keimig, and Zack Marks as helms, and Stephanie Reynolds, Liz Foy, Ash Landes, and Matt Gardiner as crews.

This qualifyies them for the ICSA National Semifinals - West, to be hosted by USC in Long Beach, CA on April 26-27, 2008. Eighteen schools from across the county will be vying for the top eight positions which advance to the Nationals Championships in Newport, RI on June 2-4, 2008.

WEEK 7 - March 22-23, 2009

Eight SAISA South teams participated in the fifth and final series regatta at USF-St. Petersburg March 22.
Winds were southeasterly around 6 knots, chop was significant, and tidal current was flooding strongly. Eight races were sailed in each division, all modified windward-leewards, averaging 14 minutes in length. Just as the last boats reached the dock, the rain began and continued well into the night. .

USF sailors went one-two in A division. Rachael Silvererstein and Ash Landes dominated, winning six out of the eight races, while the freshman JV team of Kathleen Carter and Christine Sayler were second. In B division, the freshman JV team of Justin Ahearn and Kirsten Hunt sailed well, capturing first, while the varsity team of Darby Smith and Steph Reynolds ended up third. Combining the division scores, USF sailors ended up one-two overall, a strong finish to the South Points season.

Special thanks to USF team members Tim King, Renee Milevoj, Matt Gardiner, Danielle DeLaire, and Adam DePrimo for their assistance in running the races

Meanwhile, at Hampton University in Hampton, VA, more USF sailors were competing in the annual MAISA/SAISA event. Gonzalo Crivello accompanied Chris Keimig, Liz Foy, Zack Marks, and Diana Cabili to the eight team regatta. Although the calendar announced the arrival of spring, the weather was anything but spring-like.

Chris and Liz finished second in A division, and Zack and Diana were third in B division. Overall, the USF sailors were a solid second. Special thanks to David and Becky Foy, uncle and aunt of Liz, for hosting the USF sailors for the weekend.

WEEK 6 - March 15-16, 2008

For the conclusion of their spring break week, some USF sailors traveled to Annapolis for the Truxtun Umstead Regatta hosted by the Naval Academy on March 15-16, 2008.

Saturday started off with a great 8-12 knot NW breeze in the morning before the lunch break, but during the afternoon the breeze switched to a battle between the E and NE directions before dying altogether. Sunday morning arrived with drizzle and no wind, but a strong NNW breeze filled in at 12-18 knots by noon.

USF was represented by Mitch Hall and Steph Reynolds finishing 11th in "A" division, Tim King and Darby Smith finishing 17th in "B" division, and Zack Marks 10th in "C" division. Overall, USF was 13th out of the 20 schools competing.

Jolly sailing upwind to victory

Closer to home, Coach Allison Jolly took time off (with the help of Coed Coach Gonzalo Crivello) during Spring Break to sail in the 2008 U.S. 470 National Championships, as reported in the regatta write-up.

470 enthusiasts from the United States and Canada gathered in Sarasota, FL for the 2008 U.S. National Championships March 13-15.

Competitors ranged in age from 14 to 82 years old, and arrived from British Columbia, Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas, and Maryland to challenge the local Florida boats. Three women’s teams, three men’s teams, and five coed teams raced together on courses set in the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay. Conditions ranged from 5 knots to 18 knots, from flat water to steep chop to rolling waves.

The 2007 winning team of Allison Jolly / Andrew Sumpton adopted new team mates in 2008, with Jolly taking on US Sailing Team member Molly O’Bryan as crew, and Sumpton selecting Sarasota youth sailor Chris Stocke to helm. These top two boats combined to win all seven races, and went 1-2, respectively.

Former Marquette sailing team members Hunter Ratliff and Christopher Williams, in their debut performance in the 470 class, captured third place overall and the “Top Corinthian” award, given to the highest finishing team never before in the US Sailing team ranking system. Additionally, Chrisopher Stocke was top male junior and Christine Williams top female junior.

PRO Dave Ellis ran a fantastic event, setting up trapezoids courses averaging 40 minutes in length. He was assisted by numerous members of the University of South Florida sailing team, volunteering their time during spring break, including Zack Marks, Justin Ahearn, Kirsten Hunt, Rachael Silverstein, Scott Stephenson, Adam DePrimo, Danielle DeLaire, Andrew Jones, Ash Landes, and Matt Gardiner. Also helping were juniors from the Sarasota Youth Sailing Program, and SYSP Director Stu Gillfillen. The relaxed, low-key venue and the RC boat were provided by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron.

WEEK 5 - March 8-9, 2008

USF proved to be successful hosts of the Frank Mendelblatt Team Racing Intersectional, winning the event with a perfect 10-0 record.

With winds gusting to 30 knots, no races were attempted on Saturday. Sunday dawned with a brisk ENE at 15 to 18 knots which died down to about 10 knots for the afternoon races.

Many members of the USF sailing team worked together for the victory in this regatta, both racing on the water and helping run the event. Special thanks to alumni team members
Phil Tanner and Abby Ethington for volunteering their weekend to serve as PRO.

Meanwhile, in Annapolis, the USF Women's team raced the Navy Spring Women's Intersectional under similar conditions, but much colder. Saturday morning races were postponed due to thick fog, but once the breeze filled in, it continued to build throughout the day, until a squall line came through with gusts strong enough to capsize 27 of the 38 boats on the water. Sailors trying to hold onto their boats at the dock were pulled off the dock and into the water, even with the sails down.

Sunday was clear, cold, and breezy. The drain plugs were all frozen solid, as were the USF sailors!

Kim Witkowski and Ash Landes sailed "A" division, and Rachael Silverstein and Darby Smith sailed "B" division, finishing 12th and 13th, respectively, out of the 19 team competing. Once again Kirsten Hunt was brought along as the light crew, but once again, windy conditions prevailed and she was unable to race.

Combining the scores, USF ended up 13th overall.

WEEK 4 – Mar 1-2, 2008

This fourth weekend of the season was our busiest yet, as four USF teams were competing, locally and around the country.

The Women’s team was in Charleston, SC for the Charleston Women's Intersectional. Big shifts and breeze lines made the racing interesting, with a very strong ebb tide complicating the conditions by the end of the day. Thirteen teams from all over participated, with several of them ranked top ten.

Kim Witkoswki and Ashley Landes teamed up in “A” division, and sailed to 12th place. Rachael Silverstein and Darby Smith sailed to 7th place in “B” division. Kirsten Hunt attended her first intersectional regatta as a light air crew, but did not get a chance to sail. Overall, USF finished 10th.

Finally, the SAISA South Points #3 event was hosted by the University of Florida on lovely Lake Wambaugh. Racing was postponed until noon when the wind began to
Fill, but then quickly died off to a light, variable, shifty breeze, extremely
challenging conditions for all the sailors on the water.

Congratulations to Kathleen Carter and Christine Sayler for winning “A” division! De-team Adam DePrimo and Danielle DeLaire finished 7th in “B” division, and USF finished 6th overall.

WEEK 3 – Feb 23-24, 2008

The Old South Intersectional Regatta was hosted by the University of Florida on Lake Wauburg, just outside of Gainesville. Saturday started with a postponement for one hour to wait for the wind to fill to a very light, shifty breeze. Sunday’s races were held in a bit more breeze, but still shifty.

Women’s team members Rachael Silverstein and Ash Landes were 2nd place in A division, winning two of their nine races, while Kathleen Carter and Christine Sayler were 5th in B division, including a victory in race four. C division was sailed by Zack Marks, just back from Australia where he competed in the Laser World Championships, evidently good practice, as he dominated, winning almost half the races in his division.

Overall the USF sailors finished 2nd, losing only to the College of Charleston.

Sixty-four races (two full round robins + part of the third) were completed on Saturday with a strong ebb tide for most of the day. The breeze started at 8-10 knots and built to 15-20 by the afternoon before moderating back to the 5-10 range for the last few flights.

Team members Mitch Hall, Stephanie Reynolds, Tim King, Matt Gardiner, Chris Keimig, Liz Foy, and Katie Galloway were tied for 4th after the first day, vying for a coveted spot in the top four finals. Sunday was unkind, though, and they ended up in the consolation finals, finishing 6th overall.

Final Results (win-loss):

The final college regatta of the weekend was the first South Points 2 x 2 team race event hosted by Eckerd College. The four teams competing sailed one round robin rather quickly, but the second round robin was halted when a nasty line of storms rolled in, forcing the end of racing for the day.

USF sailors Jon Ellington, Amanda Holm, Adam DePrimo, Kirsten Hunt, and Danielle DeLaire represented USF in their first ever team race, and although they did not win a race, it was an excellent learning experience.

WEEK 2 – Feb 16-17, 2008

USF hosted the season’s first women’s regatta this weekend. Nine teams from across the country enjoyed balmy Florida weather, highs near 80 degrees, 4-6 knot breeze on Saturday. On Sunday the predicted breeze finally arrived, and the last sets had gusts 18-20 knots.

USF Sailors Kim Witkowski with crews Steph Reynolds and Elizabeth Foy ended up 5th in A division, while freshman Rachael Silverstein sailed to 3rd in B division with crews Ash Landes and Darby Smith. Their combined scores gave them 4th overall, just out of the trophies, but in front of two nationally ranked teams.

Team members Mitch Hall, Jon Ellington, and Danielle DeLaire helped run the regatta.

WEEK 1 – Feb 9-10, 2008

The SAISA Open regatta, a combined South Points and North Points event, was hosted by Eckerd College. Saturday started under overcast skies and cool temperatures with a light northerly breeze. Only 3 A races and 2 B races were completed before the rain showers arrived and the wind shut off. By Sunday morning the cold front had passed and the day was sunny with NE winds at 10-15 before the breeze abated late in the day. Ten races were sailed in each division.

On Saturday, Justin Ahearn sailed Varsity A with Ashley Nicole Lonergan crewing in her first ever regatta, while Rachael Silverstein sailed Varsity B with Alyson Dagly. JV sailors were Amanda Holm with Danielle DeLaire, also sailing in her first regatta, in A division, and Ash Landes, skippering in her first regatta, with Renee Milevoj in B division.

On Sunday, Chris Keimig sailed Varsity A with Samantha Goodman, while Rachael Silverstein teamed up with Ash Landes in B division. For the JV team, Kathleen Carter sailed with Renee Milevoj and Adam DePrimo, in his first regatta as skipper, sailed with Danielle DeLaire.

Highlight of the weekend was seeing Adam DePrimo, in his second regatta ever, and Danielle DeLaire, in her first regatta ever, rounding the first mark tied for first place the final race of the day. They hung on to finish 5th out of 17 boats that race, great job!

WEEK 9 – November 3-4, 2007

USF SAILOR 3rd at ICSA SINGLEHANDED NATIONALS

Just as the Bulls football team came up just short in their game against Cincinnati, it was a weekend of close finishes for USF sailors, both on and off the water.

Team members from the St. Petersburg campus participated in the Homecoming competition, featuring events such as cardboard boat races, a blood drive, kayak races, a canned goods collection, a dunk tank, and a homeless awareness camp-out. The sailing team came up just short, losing by a mere 5 points (out of 100 plus possible points) to the Barbecue Club. Thanks go to Rene Milevoj and Chris Keimig for their leadership.

Across the Bay, the key event leading up to Homecoming was the parade. Team members borrowed a Laser, and decorated the float with a nautical theme, complete with pirate attire. The Radial rig was just a bit too tall to fit under the power wires, but additional mainsheet tension solved the problem. Special thanks to Adam Deprimo (trailer) and Rachael Silverstein (Hummer), and SAAC representatives Amanda Holm and Ash Landes.

The team was oh so close to 100% involvement. An amazing 95% of the team either participated in homecoming activities in St. Pete or Tampa, or volunteered at Strictly Sail to fulfill our obligation to event organizers. This is an incredible statistic, and one you can all be proud of. The future success of the team could well depend on this kind of team spirit and enthusiasm.

windy sailing thanks to hurricane noelMeanwhile, even though Hurricane Noel stayed well offshore the coast of Florida, the resulting pressure gradient did bring fantastic 20+ winds to Tampa Bay all week long. As some freshmen members of the team were traveling up to Rhode Island for the ACC Freshman Regatta, Noel was also traveling northward, timing his arrival to coincide with Saturday’s racing. By noon, winds were a steady 30, gusting to 50-55, waves on the coast were 20 feet, rain was slashing almost horizontally, and the air temperature was only 48 degrees. Not surprisingly, racing was canceled.

windy sailing

What a difference a day makes! By race time Sunday morning, skies were sunny, seas were flat, and winds were dying, from 10 down to 2 by mid-afternoon, with the final race halted due to no wind. Zack Marks and Amanda Holm ended up just 2 points out of 9th place in A division, with finishes of 6-11-9-4-12. Andrew Jones and Stephanie Reynolds sailed the first four B division races, with finishes of 2-11-10-7, and Rachael Silverstein helmed the final race. Their score was just 1 point out of 8th place. John and Susan Keimig (parents of Chris) hosted the freshmen, preparing a fantastic spaghetti dinner feast on Saturday evening.

Finally, in Seattle, WA, Mitch Hall was battling for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship. By the end of the first 13 races of the 18 race series, Mitch was clinging to a one point lead. But the final few races proved costly, and he slid to 3rd place, still a great performance against the top collegiate singlehanded sailors in the country.

WEEK 8 – October 27-28, 2007

USF WINS COED SAISA Fall Dinghy Championships

A very young coed team of two freshman, a sophomore, a junior, and first year coach Gonzalo Crivello combined efforts to win the SAISA Fall Dinghy Championships held October 27, 2007 at Eckerd College. Under cloudy skies and NE winds of 5-12 knots, the A division team of Mitch Hall and Stephanie Reynolds dominated, winning 8 out of 10 races. The B division team of Tim King and Andrew Jones placed 3rd, but only 6 points behind 1st, giving USF the overall victory.

Patiently waiting as alternates were Ash Landes, Chris Keimig, Zack Marks, and Joy Tyler.

The team advances to the Atlantic Coast Championships to be held November 10-11, 2007, coincidentally also at Eckerd College.

WEEK 7 – October 20-21, 2007

USF TAKES THE WEEK OFF

Under new rules limiting the number of weekends that sailors can participate in collegiate competitions, USF sailors chose to take this week off. That did not stop some of them from competing, though, as they traveled to Ft. Myers for the Junior Olympic Beach Romp Festival hosted by Edison Sailing Center on October 20-21, 2007.

Inspired by team member Amanda Holm’s generous offer to house sailors at her parent’s house in Ft. Myers, 6 sailors plus coach Allison Jolly traveled for the event. Four Radial sailors competed for USF, Darby Smith, Justin Ahearn, Amanda Holm, and Ash Landes, competing in her first ever event as a skipper. Andrew Jones and Kathleen Carter sailed in the C420 class, alternating helm/crew duties.

Many, many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Holm for the delicious homemade lasagna dinner and decadent dessert selections Saturday evening, to Mr. and Mrs. Ahearn for loaning a 4-boat Laser trailer, and to Steve Olive, Director of Edison Sailing Center for all of his assistance.

WEEK 6 – October 13-14, 2007

USF TRAVELS AND HOSTS

Some of the most experienced team members traveled to Annapolis this weekend for the Navy Fall Regatta. With Mitch Hall sailing a Laser to 7th place in C division, the duo of Chris Keimig and Steph Reynolds stepped up into A division and did a great job in their intersectional event sailing together, finishing 15th. Tim King and Andrew Jones paired up in B division, finishing 11th. Freshman Darby Smith was one of only 3 women competing in the Laser Radial D division, and finished 16th.  Overall USF was 14th out of the 20 colleges competing.

Other team members were competing in the final South Points event of the season at Eckerd College. Matt Gardiner and Joy Tyler were 3rd in A division while JV sailors Justin Ahearn and Rene Milvoj were 8th. Kathleen Carter and Shannon Kernan finished 7th in B division while JV sailors Jon Ellington and Abby Tirabassi finished 11th.

Finally, USF hosted the SAISA high school qualifying regatta for the Great Oaks Regatta. Fourteen teams from as far away as St. Croix, V.I. and North Carolina competed. The top teams advance to the Great Oaks Regatta single-division regatta in New Orleans. Thank you to Acting Waterfront Director Zac Oppenheim, Adam Deprimo, and Ash Landes for their assistance in making this regatta possible.

WEEK 5 – October 6-7, 2007

USF QUALIFIES FOR SLOOP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

USF sailors Mitch Hall, Tim King, Chris Keimig, and alternate Dave Weaks traveled with coach Gonzalo Crivello to Charleston for the SAISA qualifying regatta for the National Championships on October 6-7, 2007. Only one school advances to the Nationals, meaning it was a winner take all competition. USF sailed incredibly well to victory in very tight racing, beating strong teams from Eckerd and host College of Charleston. They will travel to the Ft. Worth, TX for the Nationals which will also be sailed in J22’s.

USF Women sailors traveled to Annapolis for the Navy Fall Women’s regatta. Freshman sailors Darby Smith sailed the Radial in C division to 11th place, and Rachael Silverstein placed 13th in A division, sailing with sophomore Ali Kirchofer. Veterans Kristin Britt and Alyson Dagly were also 13th in B division, giving USF a 13th overall out of the 18 teams competing.

Finally, Acting Waterfront Director Zac Oppenheim played coach, traveling to Lake Lanier, Georgia with Andrew Jones and Ash Landes, 2nd in A division, and Justin Ahearn and Steph Reynolds, 3rd in B division. USF finished 2nd overall in the 7 boat SP-5 regatta hosted by Georgia Tech.

WEEK 4 – September 29-30, 2007

USF WOMEN SAILORS QUALIFY FOR ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS

USF hosted the SAISA Women’s qualifiers for Single-handed Nationals on Saturday, September 29. Three freshman USF sailors competed in the field of 10. Darby Smith finished 4th, Kathleen Carter 8th, and Amanda Holm 9th, but only the top two advance to the Nationals.

On Sunday, the SAISA Women’s Fall Dinghy Championships were also hosted by USF. Winds were as forecast, from the NE, generally 16-22 knots, with some gusts even stronger. Courses were set in the protected waters of Bayboro Harbor because the waves on Tampa Bay were too large for the fleet of FJs to handle. At one point during race number 5, seven out of twelve boats were capsized, and racing was halted at the conclusion of that race because of a shortage of safety boats

Sailing to 3rd in A division were Rachael Silverstein and Ash Landes, while Kristin Britt and Alyson Dagly were 2nd in B division. The combined scores gave USF 3rd overall, enough to qualify for the ACC Women’s Championships at Yale. A huge thank you to all the team members who assisted in running the regatta.

WEEK 3 – September 22-23, 2007

USF SAILOR QUALIFIES FOR SINGLEHANDED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

USF sailor Mitch Hall made the most of home field advantage, winning the SAISA Single-Handed Championships and qualifying regatta for Nationals. He bested a field of 12 sailors, including teammates Zack Marks (5th), Justin Ahearn (8th), and Dave Weaks (12th). Mitch will travel to Seattle in November for the Nationals.

Other sailors traveled to Rollins for the SP-3 regatta. Andrew Jones and Ash Landes sailed to 2nd in A division, while JV sailors Kathleen Carter and Katie Galloway were 3rd. Matt Gardiner and Sam Goodman were 1st in A division, while JV sailors Darby Smith and Christine Sayler were 5th. The overall scores were enough to give USF sailors the win.

WEEK 2 – September 15-16, 2007

USF traveled to the Nevins Regatta at King’s Point, NY on September 15-16, 2007. Freshman Zack Marks competed in Lasers in C division and finished 6th, just one point out of a top five finish. Mitch Hall and Liz Foy sailed in A division, finishing 13th, while Tim King and Andrew Jones finished 13th in B division. Overall, USF was 11th out of the 20 schools competing.

Members of the Women’s team traveled to Dartmouth, NH for the Mrs. Hurst Regatta the same weekend. Kristin Britt and Alyson Dagly sailed in A division, finishing 17th out of 18 boats in A division, while Lauren Whitehurst and Rachael Silverstein shared helming duties and with crew Ash Landes, finished 12th in B division. Unfortunately, the combined points total USF 17th out of the 18 teams participating.

Finally, USF sailing team alumni Phil Tanner and Abby Ethington traveled with the USF SP-2 sailors to Charleston, where they coached the team to 2nd place overall. Chris Keimig and Steph Reynolds won A division, and Matt Gardiner and Samantha Goodman were 2nd in B division.

WEEK 1 – September 8-9, 2007

The opening regatta weekend for USF sailors was busy. New coed coach Gonzalo Crivello took some of the team to Yale University, where they competed in the Harry Anderson Regatta, finishing 16th out of 24 teams. Mitch Hall and Liz Foy sailed to 13th in A division, and Tim King and Andrew Jones ended up 16th in B division. They had some strong individual race finishes, and are confident they will improve as the season progresses.

Competing were Zack Marks, Matt Gardiner, Justin Ahearn, Jon Ellington, Adam Deprimo, Jorge Lucero, Thien Huynh, Ray Vinson, Kathleen Carter, Alyson Dagly, Kristin Britt, Rachael Silverstein, Lauren Whitehurst, Ash Landes, Renee Milevoj, Samantha Goodman, Amanda Holm, Stephanie Reynolds.
